Joseph Glatthaar’s Forged in Battle is not the first excellent study of Black soldiers and their White officers in the Civil War, but it uses more soldiers’ letters and diaries — including rare material from Black soldiers — and concentrates more intensely on Black - white relations in Black regiments than do any of its predecessors.

第一：

本句基本上文法還好，前半部 first excellent study of Black soldiers and their White officers in the Civil War，這當中的and是黑人士兵和白人軍官的連接詞，他們綁一起，往後在『逗點』後方邏輯中有轉折but，所以後面才是重點，冰與火之歌第一季的第一集，臨冬城的老爹 Eddard "Ned" Stark就說過：『 Everything before the word ‘but’ is bullshit 』，所以文章結構來說出題點永遠在轉折之後，因為轉折前方的東西已經被打槍了，就不會再是文章的主旨了，當然也就沒必要出題了

第二：

it uses more soldiers’ letters and diaries，這裡面的it當然就是代表那本書Joseph Glatthaar’s Forged in Battle

第三：

letters and diaries — including rare material from Black soldiers —這裡其實可以不用看如果趕時間的話，破折號裡面只是插入語，所以重點不在這裡，只是補充前方的整句話，這當中其實也是從關係代名詞演化來的，原本應該是這樣：, which included rare material from Black soldiers, 。這個前後的『逗點』是必加無疑的，如果不加的話會變成限定用法，當作前方先行詞的範圍界定，『沒加豆點喔』就會變成『包括士兵們稀有素材的信件』，這個意思就是所有的信跟日誌當中有包括稀有素材的那幾本他要，其他的就不收集了，但是這跟原文應該差很多吧，原文當中應該說是參考很多信件和日誌，而參考日誌的這件事其中也包括了參考士兵們的稀有素材，如果要把這裡翻譯到位的話，這裡面得which要翻譯成：『而前面這件事』。所以這裡是前方的參考書信講完後，後面參考rare material繼續補充還做了哪些。

第四：

— and concentrates more intensely on Black - white relations in Black regiments，破折號後方又一個並列，這讓主詞it，繼續接著講第二差異，這邊是差異喔，因為上面but轉折，句子已經剛剛那邊做分水嶺了，but之前講的是這本書的壞話，but後面是講這本書的好話，所以只要看到and出現表示這裡的邏輯是跟上面一句同向，所以理所當然要期待這本書的另一個優點，那我們看到了專注在Black - white relations這個議題上。好的大致上主要內容就到這裡。

第五：

than do any of its predecessors. 這個內容主要是讓讀者回想Joseph Glatthaar’s Forged in Battle到底是跟誰比而已，基本上這句等於廢話。但是在文法上值得討論，這裡的any of its predecessors其實是主詞，但為何擺在後面呢，前面還加助動詞do，其中這個又來個煩人的倒裝，其用法跟某個常用句子很類似，He had been these, so do I.簡單來說就是助動詞的倒裝用法。而本句的do就是uses more soldiers’ letters and diaries, and concentrates more intensely on Black - white relations，這兩件事情。
